Wikipedia, LiveJournal win Webby Community category

The Webby Awards, the annual selection of the best of the best on the internet, has named Wikipedia as the winner in the Community category, showing just how broad the concept of “community” has become on the internet.

In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Wikipedia is an open, collaborative effort to build a free web-based encyclopedia. It is distinctive in that anyone on the internet can, generally, edit any of the content on the site. In spite of obvious potential concerns about spamming and accuracy, it has become a popular starting point for research among money because of its coverage of topics not included in many mainstream encyclopedias and the currency of its information.

Blogging/journaling community LiveJournal was the People’s Choice winner in the category.
