I completely agree. There are so many social networking sites available that the space is fragmenting exponentially. At some point there will have to be some consolidation or at least a way to pull information into a single interface.

Take LinkedIn for example. They have clearly captured the professional market with a couple of great features–People, Answers and especially the Jobs components. The problem though is it’s not clear how the average user can take advantage of the wealth of information.

Case in Point: I have 225 1st degree connections, 17,000+ 2nd degree connections and 1.7+ million 3rd degree connections. By the numbers this is a healthy network. But what do I do with it?

For me there are two things I would like LinkedIn to help me accomplish:

1. Enhance my face-to-face networking (it does a great job helping me here)
2. Help me close more business (not so great)

To accomplish # 2 I have to have a way to conduct a detailed search of the 1.7 million people to find those who would be good prospects for me. For now I can narrow by location, by industry, but what about more specific demographics? The keyword search just doesn’t do the job.

If I look through my 215 connections, and look at the people they are connected to I see that about 20% of the people have included their current company size. Viewing about 500 profiles I found about 20 companies with 51 to 200 employees (this of course took about 6 hours)

Next I did a search using the keyword function with “51-200 employees” as the keyword and 1 company was listed in the search result. Some where there is a disconnect.

There is a tremendous amount of information that users of social media sites are providing as content to these sites, but there is no effective way to sort the information into meaningful data.

The company that finds a way to mine this information in an ethical manner will not only provide the grounds to take social networking to the next level, but will get extremely rich in the process.

I’m excited about the future potential but for now I’m saying “Where’s the beef?”
