Blogging for a Job

FastCompany.com just published our latest column: Blogging for a job.

Heather Hamilton, a senior recruiter for marketing talent at Microsoft, recently performed an unusual recruiting experiment. As creator of the Marketing and Finance at Microsoft Blog, Heather asked her readers to link to a post on her blog from their blog resumes, and committed that she would check out her reader's resumes by reviewing her blog's referral logs.

The implication of this? For one, if you don't understand how to do what she's asking you to do, you're probably not qualified to work in the marketing department at Microsoft.

  • Great post! I'm glad to see that even large companies like Microsoft are using new and innovative approaches. Having had to sort through several hundred too many resumes in my lifetime I think they're more or less useless. Rarely do they tell you how well someone can do one job or another. Creating appropriate hoops to jump through like this one make a lot of sense.

Blogs are also a great networking tool for job seekers. Not only can you discuss your relevant experience and ask for input (referrals) on job leads. Smart employers can also use them to learn a lot more about a job applicant than they're likely to find anywhere else.

Can you tell I love blogs? Keep up the good work.

    Happy networking!
