Online networks help journalists scoop stories

As a journalist, one benefit of building a large network and participating in online communities is that sometimes you get a scoop on a really hot story. Well, that happened to me last night…

Yesterday, Amazon and Lightning Source lost a $15 million print-on-demand patent infringement suit that has potentially far-reaching impact for the printing and publishing industries. And I got the scoop (by at least half a day) by being an active member of the Ebook Community Yahoo Group.

Of course, I still did my fact-checking—read the verdict and looked up the patent, called a patent attorney (who I found on Ryze) for some discussion of the potential implications, etc. But the point is that I was “there and aware”.
